Leading yourself
Leadership has become a such buzz word lately it’s almost disappointing. With mental health, consulting groups, and a general lack of it wherever, it’s no surprise honestly. And it’s scary thinking we have people out there that just don’t know how to lead. In reality, that’s ok. Because on the other side of the spectrum, there are plenty of people out there that are willing to teach you. How do you determine the core concepts of leadership and how to become a good leader? What does that even mean?
Yourself
First, you have to be willing to lead yourself. If you don’t know YOU, then how do you expect to know others? And it’s not an easy answer. An answer that could take some time and discovery, through whatever means necessary. Visual boards, wordplay, mind melds, jot down all the words you can think of in a minute, etc. There are a ton out there to help you discover who you really are, what you want, and how you are going to help the world.
There is a great progression I learned recently about what we are all looking for. Everyone talks about passion. You have to find your passion and you won’t work a day in your life. We’ve all heard that right? Well, just because my passion is skiing all winter, doesn’t mean I want to be a ski bum my whole life. Sure I love skiing, being outside, hanging with great people, and ripping fresh lines, but I don’t want to do that for work. So passion really doesn’t hit the point. However, then finding your passion and what you want to do with that, helps find your character. Your character is how you act when people aren’t looking. How you conduct yourself and what values you live by. Necessary of course, but doesn’t get me the whole cake if you know what I mean. So if I have a passion and character, does that make me a good leader? Maybe, maybe not. Which takes us to fulfillment. Fulfillment is what you are in search of. Fulfillment is what drives you to wake up in the morning and change the world around you based on your character and passions in this world. Fulfillment is what creates influence.
What’s influence then?
You can’t be a leader if you have no influence. Forcing people to follow you, being promoted into a leadership role, or adding an extra bar on your chest doesn’t make you a leader. You may be in a leadership role, but you may not have influence. Any great leader will tell you, if you create influence, people want to listen to what you have to say. They will follow you in the fire. If you find a tribe that does this with you, you have built relationships. And let me tell you, the key to success in this world and the route to winning, is being humble once you have the following, own up to all your mistakes, failures, and your team’s failures, advocate and always accept teamwork into your life, and build lasting relationships with people. If you can master that, you’re going to be fulfilled in this world.
So, action steps?
