Tenet Series: Attitude

The mindset in which you approach life matters. From self talk to stress mitigation your attitude towards situations can drastically change your psychological outcome. If you want to skip the rest of the post, here’s the summary: If you approach activities with a positive attitude you will benefit. If you approach things negatively, your body will take it negative. Pretty simple, right? But in some situations that may not be easy. The ‘what if’s’ start coming out, and you try to think of everything negatively to beat this theory. Like what if I’m five days away from civilization, it starts storming, I’m low on food, and the wolves are out to get me? (really went for it) Well, find out how you can win. Your brain is a powerful tool who’s only goal in life is to help you survive. During those dark times, if you’re thinking, I can do this, I just need to put one foot in front of the other, your physiology will follow. The old theory of mind and body being two entities is outdated and incorrect. They are more connected than we ever thought.

Flow state is not just found in deep endurance races. Though a sought after euphoric state, flow can also mean how you function in the world around you. How do you perform when the stressors hit? What if we told you you can perform better with the right tools? Attitude being a foundation of this truth. In the best seller, A Man’s Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl, he explains that the only thing someone can’t take from us is our attitude. The world can not be without suffering, nor should it be. The suffering is what forces us to find meaning in our lives. And importantly, our attitude towards these struggles and picturing our outcomes is incredibly powerful to the results, both internal and external.

Eustress, not distress

So rethink your stress. Here’s a great article on rethinking stress I liked - Hey Sigmund. We both agree that your attitude and approach to the stressor is so important. On a cellular level you actual change what your body is doing. By changing your attitude, distress becomes eustress and eustress is our goal. It makes our body work more efficiently and better fight off chronic disease.

The next time you face something scary, difficult, or traumatizing, I want you to think ‘good’. I want you to change your outlook and your reality to positively affect you. Remember, your attitude is yours and yours alone. Let’s listen to Frankl, take a page from his book (which has sold over 10 million copies) and think, nobody can take that from you, only you can.
